Getting started with Wix
Using Wix you can create just about any kind of website in a matter of hours!

Wix is a powerful tool for business owners who want to get their business online. Because of Wix's "drag and drop" platform which provides a simple and intuitive way of moving things around on the screen, the process of building a website no longer requires a web developer to code your website. You can just click and move your mouse around and design your website to look exactly as you want it!

Drag and drop is a computer term that refers to a way of moving things on your computer screen using your mouse or touchpad. It's like picking up a physical object with your hand and moving it to a new location, except you're doing it on the computer screen. Many computer programs, including website builders like Wix, use drag and drop to make it easier for people to create and design content without needing to know any coding or programming languages.

Of course, there are still some areas that will require a bit of learning if you are completely new to the world of website development and programs like Wix. Here are 5 things i consider important for someone who is just beginning:

  1. Familiarize yourself with Wix's interface: Before you start building your website on Wix, it's essential to spend some time getting to know the platform's interface. Wix has an intuitive drag-and-drop editor, which makes it easy for users to design and customize their websites. Take some time to explore the different features and tools available in the editor, so you can get the most out of Wix. By watching tutorials you will get a sense for how things are done, but only once you spend some time on the Wix Website Editor, will you truly get a feel for how to get things done.

  2. Choose a template: Wix has a wide range of templates to choose from, so you don't have to start from scratch when building your website. Select a template that matches the style and functionality of your site. You can customize the template to fit your needs later, so it's essential to choose a template that provides a solid foundation for your site. Once you have the template get a feel for the way it flows, the structure it gives the site and the features that are included. If you are missing a feature, you can always add it to the template.

  3. Plan your site's structure: Before you start adding content to your site, it's essential to plan its structure. Think about how you want to organize your content and what pages you need on your site. If you have a solid idea of what your structure should be then perhaps you should do this before you select the template. But in my experience, the template can often inform the structure. If you are just starting out, I recommend you choose a template, figure out the structure of the template and then add to that structure until it matches your needs.

  4. Use Wix's built-in tools: Wix has a range of built-in tools and features that can help you build a professional-looking website. For example, you can use Wix's image editor to customize your images, or you can use Wix's SEO tools to optimize your site for search engines. Take advantage of these tools to make your site look and perform its best. For each tool, you will be able to search for a corresponding tutorial. Just go to google and type in "how to use [name of Wix tool]" and then follow along the tutorial until you have got it working on your site.

  5. Test and optimize your site: Once you've built your site, it's essential to test it thoroughly to ensure that it's working correctly. Check all of your links and make sure that your pages load quickly. YOu can test your site initially on the Preview Mode built into the Wix Editor Website, but it is essential to also go to your live website and make sure everything works as you expect it to. Be sure to ddo this testing on both the desktop and Mobile versions of your site. You literally need to open the site on your computer and on your phone to make sure that you. Once you have launched your site and you have started attracting visitors, you can use Wix's built-in analytics tools to track your site's performance and make adjustments to improve your site's user experience.

Where can you learn about how to use Wix?

There are a huge number of places to learn Wix including in person courses, online webinars and online courses, YouTube videos, blogs and official Wix documentation. I'll link my two favourite free online resources at the bottom of this next list. Here are some options to get you started:

  1. Wix Support Center: Wix's support center is a comprehensive resource that provides detailed instructions, tutorials, and articles on building websites on Wix. You can access the support center directly from the Wix editor.

  2. Wix YouTube Channel: Wix has an official YouTube channel that features video tutorials on building websites on Wix. The videos cover a range of topics, from getting started with the platform to more advanced customization techniques.

  3. Wix Blog: Wix's official blog is another great resource for learning about website building on Wix. The blog features tips, tutorials, and case studies on building websites on Wix.

  4. Online Courses: There are many online courses available that focus on building websites on Wix. Some of these courses are free, while others require a fee. Websites like Udemy, Skillshare, and Coursera offer a range of courses on website building with Wix.

  5. Community Forums: Wix has an active community forum where users can ask questions, share tips, and get advice on building websites on Wix. The forum is a great place to connect with other Wix users and learn from their experiences.

My favourite resources are the YouTube channel Wix Training Academy and the CodeCademy Wix Velo course the codecademy course is definitely not for everyone, but if you want to eventually do what I do and build websites for people, this is an amazing course and it will teach much more than just the fundamentals of Wix.

I'd love to hear what you are going to use Wix for! Where are you going to get your training? Let me know in the comments!

A website can help you save money on traditional marketing:

A website can be a cost-effective way to market your business, as it allows you to reach a large audience without the high costs associated with traditional marketing methods like print or television advertising. Once you have a free website you can share it easily with family or friends over whatsapp or email; and just like that you're marketing your business!

Rating: 3 star difficulty level.

Let's start by saying, building an Ecommerce website on Wix is probably the best way for big and small businesses to get an online store online fast. Wix is an incredible website builder that is

  1. easy to learn

  2. extremely functional

  3. makes updating an online store really easy and scalable

So, if it's so easy and great why doesn't everyone do it? Well that's where you have to look at what building an online store actually entails...

To build an online store you need:

  1. a GREAT product, that people want and has a good profit margin

  2. an awesome brand that people can understand, identify with and stay loyal to

  3. awesome photography of your products

  4. great reviews of your products

  5. a marketing platform like social media or some other way to drive traffic

  6. a marketing strategy and the content (pictures or videos etc.) to execute the strategy

  7. an extremely user friendly and professional looking websites, as "amateur-looking sites" are the number one cause for a person not trusting a website

  8. a registered business with a business bank account (this is so you can collect money)

  9. an account with a payment gateway provider (this is more difficult in stricter countries)

  10. a fulfilment strategy. - this is how you deliver your products to the people that buy them

That is a short but very important list of things you absolutely NEED before you even build a website. Once you have all of that, building a professional looking site, that is user friendly and functional are only two of your challenges. So being good at Wix doesn't mean you will have a successful online store. Being good at Wix is the easy part of owning an online business.

At Marshall Arts, we build stores for clients all the time. We provide a number of services that take care of all of those needs above. That's why people hire out agencies to build their online businesses all the time. Perfectly normal people with little to none of above "needs" taken care of, outsource their online business and make good money doing so. In a lot of ways, it is kind of like Ghost Writing a novel... Writing a novel is "easy enough" so long as you can speak and write... But there is so much more to a good novel than just the author's ability to craft a sentence. This is what website building agencies understand and it is the main reason to work with them.

What is awesome about Wix, is that even after the agency has built your site, it is easy enough for someone with absolutely ZERO website experience to take over and manage on their own.

Building a site with Wix from scratch, if you have zero website experience, will take you a little while but it is 100% possible and if you have all of the above needs taken care of and all that is missing is your site, then I seriously recommend you start building it right now.

But... if you only have a great product and you need everything else on that list, I seriously recommend working with agencies to outsource those jobs. You'd be surprised how little it can actually cost.

Of course if you decide to just go it alone and build yourself a Wix site then I do recommend checking out YouTube for step by step details on how to do that. There is a channel called the Wix Training Academy and they have over 483 videos about how to do things on Wix. So whether you are stuck with a small problem or need to know how to build a website from scratch, their channel is bound to have something relevant for you.

The above video link is a whole playlist created by the Wix Training Academy and it is the ultimate guide to creating an Ecommerce website on Wix. I highly recommend you check that out.
